About this Record
Before Roger Nichols achieved legendary status among soft rock and sunshine pop aficionados with Roger Nichols & The Small Circle of Friends, he led the Roger Nichols Trio. Released in 1966 on Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss’s burgeoning A&M Records imprint (catalog number 801), this 7-inch single is a pivotal early artifact in the California sunshine pop and sophisticated easy-listening canon.
Produced by the acclaimed Tommy LiPuma and featuring orchestral arrangements by Mort Garson, the A-side presents a breezy, harmonically lush rendition of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David staple “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” The B-side, “Our Day Will Come” (composed by Mort Garson and Bob Hilliard), delivers equally velvet jazz-pop vocal harmonies that laid the groundwork for Nichols’ defining late-60s recordings. Housed in its classic concentric-circle A&M company sleeve, this 45 RPM single remains an essential piece of crate-digging history, especially prized by collectors of 1960s West Coast pop and Japanese Shibuya-kei tastemakers.

(Wife’s thought: Roger Nichols Festival, record number seven! This is finally the last Roger Nichols from the box I just opened in my room. Did he buy them all in bulk from the same record store, or track them down individually and bundle them together? Given how haphazardly they’re handled, my money is on scooping them up all at once from the same shop.)
