About this Record
Released in 2005 on Tokyo indie imprint Moodsville Records, What Girls Want For A Man! presents two dancefloor-ready remixes of Japanese singer-songwriter Maki Rinka’s playful track (originally titled 「だって女のこのもん」). Licensed from Victor Entertainment, this 7-inch single captures the infectious, swing-infused post-Shibuya-kei and Japanese club jazz groove of the mid-2000s.
The A-side delivers the energetic “DJ 440’s Top Billin’ Mix” crafted by DJ 440, laying down lively hip-hop breaks alongside jazzy cut-ups. On the flip, acclaimed producer Boot Beat (a.k.a. Naoaki Kamiya) brings “The 4 Piano Sound Mix,” blending bouncy cut-up piano chords and driving beat-juggling that made this 45 a coveted secret weapon among Japanese club DJs and crate diggers. Housed in a charming retro-styled sleeve designed by Shinichi Hirabayashi and Masakazu Ohta, it remains a delightful fusion of showtune whimsy and modern turntablism.

「この頃って、どんな曲でもリミックスが出るのが当然のような時代だったなあ、と少し懐かしくなりました。」
(Wife’s thought: It made me a little nostalgic—back in those days, it felt like it was just taken for granted that every song would get a remix. )
