Roy Budd – Roy Budd Is… The Sound of Music (1967 UK Mono LP)

About this Record

Recorded and released in 1967 on the British Pye Records label (NPL 18195), Roy Budd Is ‘The Sound of Music’ captures the prodigiously talented British pianist Roy Budd at the very beginning of his legendary career—years before he penned seminal soundtrack masterpieces like Get Carter (1971). Released when Budd was merely twenty years old, this sophomore outing features the young jazz virtuoso reimagining the iconic Rodgers & Hammerstein score with remarkable sophistication, flair, and swing.

Produced by veteran hitmaker Tony Hatch and featuring orchestration conducted by Johnny Harris, the sessions boast an elite rhythm section including modern jazz heavyweight Dave Holland on double bass and Chris Karan on drums. With brilliant arrangements split among Budd, Harris, and Hatch, the record bridges lush orchestral easy listening and sharp British modal/trio jazz, making it an essential crate-digger piece for enthusiasts of 1960s UK jazz and film composition history.

「子どもまだ小さい頃みんなで聴いたね。CDやyoutubeでだったけど。」

(Wife’s thought: We used to listen to this together when the kids were little—though back then, it was on CD and YouTube, not vinyl.)
